PRODUCT REVIEW: Willow’s thoughts on the LiveTrack GPS Tracker

We have had the opportunity to review the LiveTrack GPS Tracker from Ultimate9 (previously iDRIVE Australia). This clever little device to locate and track your rig using your smartphone. We’ve been testing this in the cruiser for a while now and, just like the iDRIVE throttle controller, installation was a breeze. It’s simply a matter of registering your SIM card then it’s an easy, two-wire install before chucking the free iCar app on your phone and you’re good to go.

TIP: make sure you click the SIM housing all the way in or like me, you could find yourself in Japan!

So what’s it actually do?

Well as the name suggests, it live tracks your vehicle’s whereabouts. Using GPS satellites to determine the exact location of the tracker, it feeds the data back to your mobile. You set the frequency yourself by choosing from the five available options. These range from 30 second to 2 hourly updates.

You can use the Parking Monitor feature to receive an alert as soon as the tracker starts moving. Alternatively, you can set a geofence which was one of the main features that attracted me to the product. I’m not keen on some grubby thief running off with my rig so I set a timed geofence. By doing so, I get alerted immediately if the tracker leaves the designated boundary. The best thing is that you can monitor all this right from your smartphone. And for those with plenty of toys, the device can be used to track anything with a battery… car, motorbike, boat, caravan etc

What else do you need to know?

After the initial purchase, there’s no monthly subscription fees. The only cost will be your data usage on the SIM card and the crew at iDRIVE reckon that using the pre-fitted Aldi SIM card, even with the most frequent location updates, you should score a full year for only $15.

The only downside I could see is that you need cellular coverage to receive updates. We often travel where there’s no mobile coverage so it wouldn’t work in those situations but there’s not much you can do about that. From a mapping point of view we have HEMA for outback or remote coverage anyway.

The LiveTrack also has a Location History feature that lets you view where the tracker has been previously on a month by month basis. Might be just me but I’ve only managed to view the current month so it’d be great if you could search back further.

Anyway if you get a LiveTrack for no other reason but security you’ll have peace of mind that should anyone ever steal your pride and joy you could go pay ‘em a visit… oops I mean tell the cops of course!
